I am thrilled to welcome you to the new academic year.
Whether you are new to Duke or returning to campus, I thank you for being part of this remarkable university community.
The beginning of the semester is an exciting time, full of new opportunities for learning; exploring emerging questions; and making discoveries that will improve people’s lives.
Yet amidst all that is new, the shared values that shape the Duke experience remain constant: respect, trust, inclusion, discovery and excellence.
These values are more than aspirations. They shape how we learn, how we work together, and how we engage in our hometown and the world.
As we begin the academic year, each of us has an opportunity to strengthen the culture that makes Duke so special.
The knowledge we share, the care we provide, the respect we show one another, and the discoveries we make will not only define this year, but they will also help shape the future.
This is a tremendous community that can achieve many great things, and I’m excited to see what we will accomplish together this year.
