To the Duke Community,
Today, as we mark the 25th anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001, I invite you to join me in solemn reflection and remembrance.
Among those killed that day were Duke alumni J. Robinson Lenoir, Peter Ortale, Christopher Todd Pitman, Todd Rancke, Frederick C. Rimmele III, and Michael Morgan Taylor. Our September 11 Memorial and six surrounding magnolia trees in Keohane Quad are dedicated in their honor.
For survivors, family members who lost loved ones, first responders, and others directly affected by the attacks, this anniversary may be especially poignant. All of us, including those not directly impacted that day, have been touched by the tragic events of that September in enduring ways.
This morning the Duke Chapel carillon will ring in memory of the victims at the times of the attacks: 8:46 a.m., 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., and 10:03 a.m. The bells will be audible on West Campus near the Chapel and broadcast globally via the Duke Chapel Facebook page.
Members of the Duke community have organized additional opportunities to mark this occasion through reflection and service. Others may choose to observe this day privately.
Regardless of how you mark today’s anniversary, this is a particularly important moment for all of us to care for and support one another, especially those for whom the weight of this anniversary is the heaviest.
Sincerely,
Vince
